Efficient implementation of Carathéodory's theorem for the single machine scheduling polytope

چکیده
In a fundamental paper in polyhedral combinatorics, Queyranne describes the complete facial structure of a classical object in combinatorial optimization, the single machine scheduling polytope. In the same paper, he answers essentially all relevant algorithmic questions with respect to optimization and separation. In the present paper, motivated by recent applications in the design of optimal incentive compatible mechanisms, we address an algorithmic question that was apparently not addressed before. Namely, we turn Carathéodory’s theorem into an algorithm, and ask to write an arbitrary point in the scheduling polytope as a convex combination of the vertices of the polytope. We give a combinatorial O(n) time algorithm, which is linear in the naive encoding of the output size. We obtain this result by exploiting the fact that the scheduling polytope is a zonotope, and by the observation that its barycentric subdivision has a simple, linear description. The actual decomposition algorithm is an implementation of a method proposed by Grötschel, Lovász and Schrijver, applied to one of the subpolytopes of the barycentric subdivision. We thereby also shed new light on an algorithm recently proposed for a special case, namely the permutahedron.

While a great portion of the scheduling literature focuses on time-based criteria, the most important goal of management is maximizing the profitability of the firm. متن کاملSingle-machine scheduling considering carryover sequence-dependent setup time, and earliness and tardiness penalties of production
Production scheduling is one of the very important problems that industry and production are confronted with it. Production scheduling is often planned in the industrial environments while productivity in production can improve significantly the expansion of simultaneous optimization of the scheduling plan. Production scheduling and production are two areas that have attracted much attention in...
متن کاملDecomposition Algorithm for the Single Machine Scheduling Polytope
Given an n-vector p of processing times of jobs, the single machine scheduling polytope C arises as the convex hull of completion times of jobs when these are scheduled without idle time on a single machine. Given a point x ∈ C, Carathéodory’s theorem implies that x can be written as convex combination of at most n vertices of C. We show that this convex combination can be computed from x and p...
متن کاملAn Efficient Bi-objective Genetic Algorithm for the Single Batch-Processing Machine Scheduling Problem with Sequence Dependent Family Setup Time and Non-identical Job Sizes
This paper considers the problem of minimizing make-span and maximum tardiness simultaneously for scheduling jobs under non-identical job sizes, dynamic job arrivals, incompatible job families, and sequence-dependentfamily setup time on the single batch- processor, where split size of jobs is allowed between batches. At first, a new Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed for t...
